White noise for your baby: calm, safe and quiet enough

Many parents find their baby settles more easily with a soft, even sound. It covers household noise and may remind babies of the whooshing they heard in the womb.

How to use white noise safely

  • Keep the volume low: about as loud as a soft shower, and never at full volume.
  • Place the phone or speaker at least two metres from the cot, never in it.
  • Use a sleep timer so the sound fades out once your baby is asleep.
  • Want to use it all night? Keep it extra quiet.

Baby mode in Noisely

Noisely has a baby mode that caps every sound at 40 percent and fades in slowly, so there's never a sudden loud start. The Nursery mix combines soft white noise with a fan.

Frequently asked questions

Is white noise bad for my baby's hearing?

At a low volume and at a distance, it's generally considered safe. Keep it quiet and don't place the speaker near your baby's head.

Should it play all night?

It's not necessary. Many parents use a timer so it fades out after they fall asleep.
